Meet Our Teachers

The Reading Corner has established a positive and safe place for educators to thrive and for students to feel safe taking risk in their learning.

One thing you feel when you walk into The Reading Corner is the warmth that emanates from both staff and the learning community.  We have such a unique group of teachers that truly love The Reading Corner, support and encourage each other, and collaborate to provide the best positive learning environment for students.

Karen Green

Founder and Director

For over seven years, I was an educator in Hillsborough County, teaching first through fourth grade. For three years, I was a reading coach. My work with teachers included coaching and modeling best practices in literacy, assessing and working with students, providing classroom management support, and on-site training to faculty.
Being involved in the reading coach project, I participated in monthly staff  development training and was trained on the most up-to-date research-based reading and writing instruction. I have attended over 400 hours of training in the last seven years to further my professional growth. As well as attending trainings, I was a trainer in Hillsborough County for the three years, training teachers in all aspects of literacy instruction.
I started the Reading Corner in my own home. It grew from 5 students to 60 requiring a new facility. Since its beginning in 2009, the Reading Corner has provided students age  through VPK with quality academic instruction. I love the freedom to provide the best, research-based instruction to help prepare our students to become lifelong readers and learners.

I am a very proud member of The Reading Corner Family.  I joined the team almost two years ago as Office Manager.

I come with a strong organizational background, having been a Corporate Meeting Planner for many years.  It is such a joy to come to work and see all the amazing kiddo's grow and change on a daily basis, it is truly wonderful to be a part of it.

I have lived in Florida since 1992, prior to that I lived in Arizona and was born and raised in Wisconsin.

My husband and I have been married for 15 years and together we have 3 children, 20, 18 and 8.

In our off time we enjoy travel, art and dining.

Wanda Bouchard

2's Teacher

My name is Wanda Bouchard and I have been a teacher for 20 years, my teaching experience has been mainly with Infants - two year olds

In my off time I am a mother of 4 who are, 23, 21, 20, and 17.  I began my career in early childhood education because I wanted to be a part of my own children’s early education experiences.  From there grew a lifelong passion in helping the youngest of learners grow and develop in their educational needs.

My education in Early Childhood allows me the opportunity to work, play, sing silly songs and laugh with the children every day.  I love to engage with the children with creative activities, play, and songs that keep the children excited about learning.

I joined the TRC team in 2015 and have since taught our youngest learners. I feel truly blessed to be a part of the TRC family, and it is an honor to share my days with each child in my class.

Penny Crooks

3's Teacher

I am the lead teacher for the two and three year old program. I have my CDA (Child Development Associate) Certificate.

Not only have I taught the two’s but I have covered the three’s class as well as the VPK class during the years that I have been at The Reading Corner.

My joy has been teaching the young children which has been for over 15 years. I enjoy incorporating Creative Movement into teaching and the kids love it.

While living in New York City I taught ballet and owned a ballet studio for 10 years.

I am married to my wonderful husband Lloyd for over 40 years. We have 3 children, 2 sons-in-law and 5 grandchildren. My family is my strength. I love to travel when I can, go see the ballet and musicals. In my spare I love to watch old black and white movies.

Maria Gross

Hello!!  I am one of the VPK teachers at The Reading Corner.  I was born and raised a "New Yorker" and earned my Bachelors Degree from SUNY-New Paltz College.

My background prior to teaching has been in Corporate America, however I felt as though it was not meant to be my long term profession.  After my son was born in 2003, my interest instantly changed to Early Literacy to help create a strong foundation in my son's education.  I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County, primarily in Exceptional Early Learning Programs.  I then became a pre-school teacher at a private school in Brandon, FL in 2007 until 2013 when we moved to Land O Lakes, FL.

My husband, son and I love Florida and can't see ourselves living anywhere else!!  I was lucky enough to begin working at The Reading Corner in October 2013.  I can't say enough wonderful things about the school and all of the teachers and staff.  They are truly the most dedicated, outstanding, amazing group of people I have ever worked with.  And it’s those attributes that give all of the children that attend The Reading Corner the strongest foundation they will have for their academic future.

Angie McLaughlin

Art / Music

I am the art teacher at TRC and TRCA, and the music teacher at TRC.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1993.

My creative spirit and love of children have led me in this teaching direction following 8 years of my own business where I painted children's custom art, furniture and name tiles. I look forward to bringing the excitement of color and various media to the Reading Corner's Art program, as well as bringing the joy of singing together in our time together in music at TRC.

I have been happily married since 2001 to a senior chief in the US Navy. We are a proud military family and have a son and a daughter together.   I am thrilled to have been teaching here since 2013.

In my spare time I enjoy being a Mom, spending time with family and friends, cooking, creating, listening to music, entertaining, gardening, traveling and giggling as much as I can.

Even at a early age I always knew that being a teacher was my calling in life.   I've studied at The Vermont school for Nannies and at Trinity College of Vermont.  I also have been trained in respite care for special needs children.

I am so grateful that I've had 25 years of teaching experience. I've been a Director or Lead Teacher for several day care facilities and preschools.   I was also a Co Director/ Lead Teacher at localMY GYMfor several years.   At MY GYM

I taught children / parent participation classes.  We worked on fine and gross motor skills with lots of music and movement, tumbling and singing.  I loved using the puppets and parachutes as tools in teaching.  I always made sure that the children would be having fun and learning at the same time, this philosophy I use to this day.

I am very blessed I have two beautiful children Abigail ( 14 years old) and Sam ( 11 years old).  Also I have a very loving husband/friend for 17 years. Being a wife and mother will always my greatest achievement in life.

I am originally from Maine and now and again you will hear that northern accent of mine. In 2003 my husband got transferred to Florida with his job.  We said good bye to the snow and hello to the Florida sun post haste. We've been Floridians ever since.

Kim Winter

VPK Teacher

I am proud to say, I have been teaching at the The Reading Corner for the past four years. I am currently a teacher in a VPK classroom. The little ones completely stole my heart!

I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida.

I began teaching in 2004 at Denham Oaks Elementary. During my time at Denham Oaks, I was a Lead Literacy Teacher and absorbed myself in professional development. Reading is my true passion!

I have been married for 10 years and have two kiddos (ages 7 1/2 and 4 years old). I am thrilled to say, they both have attended The Reading Corner!

In my spare time, I like to read and shop!

My teaching philosophy is to provide a nurturing learning environment, using researched based teaching practices while ensuring that every student is fully engaged and taking ownership of their learning.
