Meet Our Teachers

The Reading Corner has established a positive and safe place for educators to thrive and for students to feel safe taking risk in their learning.

One thing you feel when you walk into The Reading Corner is the warmth that emanates from both staff and the learning community.  We have such a unique group of teachers that truly love The Reading Corner, support and encourage each other, and collaborate to provide the best positive learning environment for students.

Karen Green

Founder and Director

For over seven years, I was an educator in Hillsborough County, teaching first through fourth grade. For three years, I was a reading coach. My work with teachers included coaching and modeling best practices in literacy, assessing and working with students, providing classroom management support, and on-site training to faculty.
Being involved in the reading coach project, I participated in monthly staff  development training and was trained on the most up-to-date research-based reading and writing instruction. I have attended over 400 hours of training in the last seven years to further my professional growth. As well as attending trainings, I was a trainer in Hillsborough County for the three years, training teachers in all aspects of literacy instruction.
I started the Reading Corner in my own home. It grew from 5 students to 60 requiring a new facility. Since its beginning in 2009, the Reading Corner has provided students age  through VPK with quality academic instruction. I love the freedom to provide the best, research-based instruction to help prepare our students to become lifelong readers and learners.

I am a very proud member of The Reading Corner Family.  I joined the team almost two years ago as Office Manager.

I come with a strong organizational background, having been a Corporate Meeting Planner for many years.  It is such a joy to come to work and see all the amazing kiddo's grow and change on a daily basis, it is truly wonderful to be a part of it.

I have lived in Florida since 1992, prior to that I lived in Arizona and was born and raised in Wisconsin.

Penny Crooks

3's Teacher

I am the lead teacher for the two and three year old program. I have my CDA (Child Development Associate) Certificate.

Not only have I taught the two’s but I have covered the three’s class as well as the VPK class during the years that I have been at The Reading Corner.

My joy has been teaching the young children which has been for over 15 years. I enjoy incorporating Creative Movement into teaching and the kids love it.

While living in New York City I taught ballet and owned a ballet studio for 10 years.

I am married to my wonderful husband Lloyd for over 40 years. We have 3 children, 2 sons-in-law and 5 grandchildren. My family is my strength. I love to travel when I can, go see the ballet and musicals. In my spare I love to watch old black and white movies.

Angie McLaughlin

Art / Music

I am the art teacher at TRC and TRCA, and the music teacher at TRC.

I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1993.

My creative spirit and love of children have led me in this teaching direction following 8 years of my own business where I painted children's custom art, furniture and name tiles. I look forward to bringing the excitement of color and various media to the Reading Corner's Art program, as well as bringing the joy of singing together in our time together in music at TRC.

I have been happily married since 2001 to a senior chief in the US Navy. We are a proud military family and have a son and a daughter together.   I am thrilled to have been teaching here since 2013.

In my spare time I enjoy being a Mom, spending time with family and friends, cooking, creating, listening to music, entertaining, gardening, traveling and giggling as much as I can.

Alison Payne

Even at a early age I always knew that being a teacher was my calling in life.   I've studied at The Vermont school for Nannies and at Trinity College of Vermont.  I also have been trained in respite care for special needs children.

I am so grateful that I've had 25 years of teaching experience. I've been a Director or Lead Teacher for several day care facilities and preschools.   I was also a Co Director/ Lead Teacher at localMY GYMfor several years.   At MY GYM

I taught children / parent participation classes.  We worked on fine and gross motor skills with lots of music and movement, tumbling and singing.  I loved using the puppets and parachutes as tools in teaching.  I always made sure that the children would be having fun and learning at the same time, this philosophy I use to this day.

I am very blessed I have two beautiful children Abigail ( 14 years old) and Sam ( 11 years old).  Also I have a very loving husband/friend for 17 years. Being a wife and mother will always my greatest achievement in life.

I am originally from Maine and now and again you will hear that northern accent of mine. In 2003 my husband got transferred to Florida with his job.  We said good bye to the snow and hello to the Florida sun post haste. We've been Floridians ever since.

Kim Winter

Onsite Director

I am proud to say, I have been teaching at the The Reading Corner for the past four years. I am currently the Onsite Director overseeing the day to day classroom activities.

I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida.

I began teaching in 2004 at Denham Oaks Elementary. During my time at Denham Oaks, I was a Lead Literacy Teacher and absorbed myself in professional development. Reading is my true passion!

I have been married for 10 years and have two kiddos (ages 7 1/2 and 4 years old). I am thrilled to say, they both have attended The Reading Corner!

In my spare time, I like to read and shop!

My teaching philosophy is to provide a nurturing learning environment, using researched based teaching practices while ensuring that every student is fully engaged and taking ownership of their learning.
